I took a break from Tie Dye and spent a few months learning about On Board Effects Loops for electric guitars, as pioneered by Jerry Garcia. I’ve always dabbled with electric guitars, but recently got curious about how they actually work and wanted to build one REALLY nice custom guitar for myself with an OBEL setup and Jerry’s favored pickups.

I figured I should practice on something cheap first, so I bought this Made in Mexico Fender Player II Stratocaster and used it as my experimentation platform. It ended up NOT being a very cheap experiment, but now I know what I’m getting into with that REALLY nice custom.

So here it is with the working OBEL and a bunch of upgrades and I’m really proud of it. Check it out!

It plays like a typical Strat. I think it sounds like a couple of Jerry’s guitars, depending on pickup selection. It weighs at least 10 pounds!

I don’t really want to sell this, it’s more of a show-and-tell. But hey, everyone has a price and it’s not like you can just buy a guitar with a working OBEL setup over at your local Guitar Center.
